Hailes Abbey (English Heritage)
Set in beautiful Cotswold pastureland, Hailes Abbey shows the remains of a ruined Cistercian Abbey. There is a museum with finely carved stonework and a history of the site which can also be recreated through audio trails. The lovely church opposite still has the remains of the tiles from the ancient Abbey.
Odda's Chapel (English Heritage)
A rare Anglo-Saxon chapel founded by Earl Odda in 1056. Close by there is one of the only surviving Anglo-Saxon monastic churches in England with its secret carved angel.
Tewkesbury Abbey
Known to some as the 'Westminster Abbey' of the feudal barony, Tewkesbury Abbey is one of the most impressive Norman churches in the country. Here are some of the finest bosses in England as well as a wonderful collection of medieval tombs and monuments. Guided, special and group tours are available. There is a wide variety of concerts and events that take place throughout the year.
There are many other historic churches in the area. Buckland Church, one
of William Morris's favourites, depicts the Victorian era whilst Highnam
Church has fantastic frescoes by Thomas Gambier Parry which are a tribute
to the art of the Victorian. John Wesley is said to have preached from
the pulpit at Stanton Church.
